This is important because this a helpful tool for teachers to use to determine where their students are struggling in their spelling. This can pin-point what they are having trouble with, whether it be short vowel sounds, digraphs, blends, or other features.

Static Reversal

Definition: When a student has a handwriting error, such as a b instead of a d. (In the case of one of these, you would still give the student credit.- Words Their Way textbook

This is important because if we did not have this rule, we would just count this wrong in a spelling inventory but that is unfair to the student. The student may know exactly what they are trying to spell, they are just confused on physically writing the letters.

Kinetic Reversal

Definition: In a spelling inventory, this is when a student writes all of the letters in a word, just mixes them up. Example.) FNA for FAN (This is not counted as correct.)- Words Their Way textbook

This is important because as teachers we can see our students are almost there. They almost grasp the words they are trying to spell. They may be having confusion with the order of the blends or digraphs and we can help them fix that. (For example, they may mix up the "T" and the "H" in match.)

Feature Guide

Definition: A guide used to analyze students' spellings. This also identifies orthographic features students know and do not know yet, along with identifies the students' stage. -Words Their Way textbook

This is important because this is how you interpret/assess the spelling inventory. This guide is how you figure out where the students are struggling and can help you to figure out where you should focus. Also this gives you a feel of where all your students are at.
